On The Ground

This hunt district is located north of Lewistown, and extends north to the Missouri River. The northern portion of the unit encompasses some of the Missouri River Breaks. Antelope will be found mostly on private land but there is public land available that has antelope also.

Antelope populations are down from a disease outbreak in 2009. It will take some time for this area to recover, but the numbers are stable and increasing slightly. There is a respectable buck to doe ratio.

Terrain

The northern portion of the unit is the Missouri River Breaks. It is rugged country with deep eroded coulees, buttes, large drainages and is very broken. As you head south and out of the breaks the country is more open and less broken, but has enough topography for good stalking. The Judith Mountains lie in this unit and antelope are found in the foothills. Closer to Lewistown the terrain is flatter with more farm ground.

  • Roughly 2036 square miles

  • 24.9% public land

  • Elevations from 3,000-5,500 feet

The Missouri River Breaks country is grasslands with scattered pines, cedars and junipers on all the broken country. To the south are more grass and some sagebrush with less trees and shrubs. The foothills of the Judith Mountains have scattered conifer trees with grass understory. There is some irrigated crop fields and scattered dry land farming throughout the area.

This district is easily accessed with gravel county roads that run throughout the area, except in the far north, these roads can get tough to travel if it rains. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access to the private land is difficult, but with some time invested permission can be obtained. There are state sections, BLM lands and ranches in the Block Management program in this unit that offer public hunting.

Lewistown has several motels, restaurants, gas stations and a sporting goods store. Winifred and Grass Range have gas and food. Camping is allowed on most National Forest land in the Judith Mountains and on the BLM lands.
