On The Ground

This hunt district is located in west central Montana and is bordered on the west by the Missouri River and Holter Lake. A majority of the unit is in the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area. This is a deer and elk wintering range. Most of the antelope are located on the six to seven mile flat adjacent to the Missouri River called the Ming Bar or to the north on the Sterling Ranch.

Antelope populations are stable and increasing. Tags are limited and this is basically an opportunity hunt with approximately 150 antelope in this small hunting district that is not managed for trophy bucks.

Terrain

The Ming Bar is a six to seven mile long flat bench adjacent to the Missouri River and there are typically 60 to 70 antelope here. Over the hill to the north is the Sterling Ranch and up to 80 antelope reside here. This area has more broken terrain and has good stalking conditions. Above these areas is the Beartooth Wildlife management Area and it is relatively steep open mountain foothill country.

  • Roughly 128 square miles

  • 39.3% public land

  • Elevations from 4,000-6,000 feet

Most of the area that antelope reside in is a large open flat grass bench that extend for miles along the Missouri River Valley to the foothills of the mountains. The Sterling Ranch to the north is mostly rangeland made up of native grasses and forbs with some sagebrush. There are some seeded grass pastures as well.

The antelope reside on the Ming Bar which is open to general hunting. If you draw a tag the Sterling Ranch to the north will allow access for the asking. Access this unit from Interstate 15 and exit at Wolf Creek and take the Beartooth Road into the unit.

Cascade has several motels, restaurants and gas stations. Camping is allowed in campgrounds on the wildlife management area. Camping is also allowed along Holter Lake and it is good fishing along with the Missouri River.
