On The Ground
Located in central Montana just to the east of the Rocky Mountain Front, this hunt district not only offers great hunting opportunities but breathtaking scenery as well.
Antelope populations are still rebounding from the winter of 2011. Good bucks are harvested annually on public land. Public land is not easily accessible, and access to private land will be difficult to obtain, but possible.
Terrain
BLM land and state land make up the majority of the public land. Terrain will vary from sagebrush and grass prairies in wide open basins, to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The elevation remains somewhat constant. Game can be found year round at all elevations.
Roughly 1,400 square miles
22.8% public land
Elevations from 3,500-6,000 feet
Vegetation
The eastern portion of the district is dominated by grasslands with some scattered areas of dry land farming. Some of the creeks and rivers have irrigated crops next to them. The winds in this area can be severe, thus most of the grasslands are classified as short grass prairie.
Access
This district is accessed by gravel county roads that run through the district. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access to the private land is restricted. With some time invested, permission can be obtained.
Camping and Lodging
Choteau has motels, restaurants and gas stations. Camping is allowed on the BLM and state lands. There are campgrounds scattered along the Rocky Mountain Front.
