On The Ground
This district is located in central Montana, just south and east of Great Falls. The district is large and includes a lot of the Little Belt Mountains, but the antelope are really only located in the lower elevations from the foothills out into the prairies. The antelope are found mostly on private land and access can be difficult and will require spending some time to acquire permission.
Antelope populations are down from historic levels. Antelope are scattered all along the eastern half of the district. There are additional doe, fawn antelope tags that can be applied for.
Terrain
This district parallels Highway 87 and 200 from Judith Gap north to almost Great Falls. It is relatively flat with creek drainages and some rolling small hills. As you get closer to the mountains the country changes to broken with more elevation changes and more drainages. A majority of the area is easy terrain for stalking antelope but very open country.
Roughly 2179 square miles
39% public land
Elevations from 4,100-8,800 feet
Vegetation
Much of the district that antelope reside on is open flat grass benches with numerous dry land agriculture fields mixed in. Near the base of the mountain the terrain is more broken with some cedars and junipers. There are irrigated agriculture crops along some of the creek drainages and the Judith River. The center pivots and irrigated fields with alfalfa attract a lot of antelope.
Access
This district is accessed by Highway 87 and 200 with numerous county roads throughout the district. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access to the private land is difficult. Permission should be obtained prior to applying for this district. There are a few state sections and some BLM scattered throughout the district and some Block Management Areas also.
Camping and Lodging
Great Falls is just to the northwest of the district and has several motels, restaurants, gas stations and sporting goods stores. There are several small towns along the highway that have gas and food. Camping is allowed on the National Forest lands in the district and Ackley Lake has a campground.
