On The Ground

This hunt district is located in central Montana, south of Lewistown. It is on the north side of the Snowy Mountains and extends east to Winnett. The antelope are typically found on private land in this area and access can be obtained, but will require spending some time to acquire.

Antelope populations are down in this district from a disease outbreak in 2009. It will take some time for this area to recover, but the numbers are stable and increasing slightly. There is a respectable buck to doe ratio. The general tag is for either sex antelope.

Terrain

This district is very diverse from the tops of the Snowy Mountains to the open prairie, most of the antelope are typically found in the eastern half. This portion is dominated by open sagebrush grasslands that is relatively flat with a few hills and coulees scattered throughout. Flatwillow Creek has agriculture fields adjacent to it and the grasslands slope up and away from there.

  • Roughly 1,182 square miles

  • 21.3% public land

  • Elevations from 3,000-4,500 feet

Most of the antelope inhabit the extensive grassland benches above and adjacent to the agriculture fields. The extreme eastern portion of this district is dominated by sagebrush and rangeland. The foothills of the Snowy Mountains have scattered patches of timber.

This district is easily accessed with good gravel county roads that run throughout the area. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access is difficult, but with some time invested, permission can be obtained. There are some state sections, BLM land and ranches in the Block Management program in this unit that offer public hunting.

Lewistown has several motels, restaurants, gas stations and a sporting goods store. Winnett and Judith Gap have gas and food. Camping is allowed at Yellow Water and Petrolia Reservoirs. Some ranches may allow tents or campers. There is camping allowed on most of the National Forest land in the Snowy Mountains.
