On The Ground

This hunt district is located in southwest Montana and covers a large area with lots of mountain ranges in it. Antelope are primarily in the Madison River Valley. The antelope are typically found on private land and access can be difficult and will require spending some time to acquire permission.

Antelope populations are stable and increasing. There is a good buck to doe ratio. The general tag is for either sex antelope.

Terrain

There are numerous mountain ranges in this unit but the antelope are mostly found on large flat open benches next to or just above the Madison River. Large benches allow for good glassing, but make for tough stalking. The exception is the far south portion of the unit, that has large basins in the foothills that hold some antelope in them. A majority of the area is easy terrain for stalking antelope.

  • Roughly 1791 square miles

  • 68% public land

  • Elevations from 5,000-7,000 feet

Most of the area that antelope reside in is open flat grass benches that extend for miles from the Madison River Valley to the mountains. There are irrigated agriculture crops along the river valley. The center pivots with alfalfa attract a lot of antelope. Further to the south the vegetation is mostly grass and sagebrush.

This unit is accessed by Highway 287 and numerous county roads. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access to the private land is difficult. Permission should be obtained prior to applying for this unit. There are a few state sections scattered through the unit. Antelope do reside on public land at the extreme southern part of the unit.

Ennis has several motels, restaurants, gas stations and a sporting goods store. Camping is allowed in campgrounds on most National Forest lands. Camping is also allowed at Ennis Lake and it has good fishing along with the Madison River.
