On The Ground
Deerlodge National Forest, Block Management Areas, BLM lands along with some private property make up a wide range of habitat for an antelope population estimated at over 900 animals.
Make sure you glass a couple of bucks before deciding to spot and stalk a certain buck. Block Management Areas offer a good opportunity to see a number of bucks.
Terrain
Big Hole and Beaverhead Rivers have etched broad valleys above Dillion in the southeast. Highland Mountains located in the middle of the district sit along the Continental Divide with peaks reaching elevations above 10,000 feet. Hundreds of square miles of open flats and rolling rangeland are broken up by creeks and gulches before giving way to stark ridges leading to foothills as they climbing up to mountain slopes.
Roughly 850 square miles
48.4% public land
Elevations from 4,800-10,200 feet
Vegetation
Along the Beaverhead and Big Hole Rivers are sections of irrigated crops and open flats of shortgrass and sagebrush. Between Interstate 15 and the Highland Mountains short grasses of buffalo and blue gramma cover the vast rangeland. Creek and river bottoms have stands of cottonwood and thick clusters of willow along their banks. Mountain slopes are covered with forests of fir, spruce, ponderosa and lodgepole pine with scattered open meadows.
Access
BLM, Forest Service and Block Management Areas and a good road system all combine for good access. Secondary roads may become impassable with heavy rains or a deep snowfall. Any moisture may make these roads slick and muddy,four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
Camping and Lodging
Dispersed camping is allowed on BLM and National Forests lands. Check with BLM regional office to find out camping restrictions that apply. Dillon and Butte offer a variety of motels, restaurants, medical facilities and service stations. The small towns of Twin Bridges and Whitehall have limited cafés and gas.
