On The Ground
This hunt district is located in south central Montana south of Interstate 90. This unit has some good quality antelope located in it, but is largely private land and it is extremely difficult access to the better areas without private access.
Antelope populations are stable. A few large ranches have a majority of the antelope and gaining access to these is extremely difficult. Some smaller ranches do allow access, but generally the quality is not as good on these properties.
Terrain
The area is mostly grasslands with some sagebrush scattered throughout. The area starts along the Yellowstone River Valley and goes uphill to the foothills of Shell Mountain. This is a very scenic antelope unit with mountains in every direction. This unit is great for spot and stalk hunting as the area is quite diverse with breaks, creek drainages and ridges.
Roughly 260 square miles
10% public land
Elevations from 4,000-6,500 feet
Vegetation
The areas adjacent to the Yellowstone River are irrigated hayfields, above that are mainly grasslands. There are numerous breaks with sagebrush, juniper, cedar and pine trees on the southern part of the unit. All of this unit is easy for walking as none of it is very steep or rough.
Access
This unit is easily accessed south of I-90 due to many ranch and numerous gravel county roads throughout the unit. The unit is mostly private land and access can be very difficult.
Camping and Lodging
Livingston is the nearest town and has numerous motels, gas stations, restaurants and a sporting goods store.
