On The Ground

This unit is located in the beautiful Paradise Valley and has the Yellowstone River as its eastern boundary. This area is primarily comprised of mountainous terrain and other areas that will not prove fruitful for the purpose of pursuing antelope. Most of the eastern edge of the unit is the typical river bottom country found in this corner of Montana with expansive grass flats and sage. Private access issues can be a hurdle some hunters will need to tackle though some opportunities can be found on public lands.

This area experiences a very low antelope harvest due to a short supply of antelope habitat and access issues.

Terrain

This unit has some very steep remote mountains with some peaks over 10,000. There have been some fires over the past decade, so burn scars are scattered throughout the unit. The primary antelope habitat will be found along the eastern edge of the unit along the Yellowstone River.

  • 56% public land

  • Elevations from 4,500-10,300 feet

Some of the higher elevations are subalpine meadows with limited timber. Lower in elevation there is more timber, mainly Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine and subalpine fir with some aspen pockets in the creek bottoms. Mid elevations to the valley floor mainly consists of juniper, Douglas fir and some open grass slopes mixed with pockets of sagebrush.

The biggest hurdle for hunters will fall within the confines of the units antelope habitat and public access issues due to private lands. Some pockets of public land can be hunted with success but the best bet will be securing private access.

If hunting the north end of the unit Livingston has the best accommodations providing lodging, restaurants and gas stations. If hunting the southern end of the unit Chico Hot springs would provide luxurious accommodations, developed hot springs, lodging and restaurants.
