Carter County lies deep in the Ozark hills and is dominated by steep ridges, rocky draws, and dense hardwood forests. The terrain is rugged and often remote, offering excellent bedding and low-pressure corridors for whitetails. This region is also part of Missouri’s elk restoration zone, and while tags are extremely limited, elk are occasionally encountered during deer season. For deer hunters, success comes from reading topography and working terrain features like benches and saddles.
