This small unit is located in the northeastern portion of Kansas and is centered around the huge Fort Riley Military Reservation. Tags for elk in Kansas are only available to residents, military personnel, and landowners. Hunting in this area is largely centered around private lands and hunters will need to keep this in mind when applying.
While western states still offer more opportunities the elk population of Kansas is growing and becoming more self-sustaining every day.
This area is largely flat with rolling hills that lead into small creeks and streams. This area is largely dominated by crops that provide excellent feed for wildlife. Past the initial struggle of locating private land to hunt hunters will find little trouble in physically covering ground in this unit.
This area is covered in large expansive crops consisting of soybean, corn, peas, hay, and barley. Native vegetation will be found in woodlots between croplands and along the many small streams and creeks. These areas are typically inhabited by willows, maples, cedar, oak, and elm along with a wide array of native grasses. Unless pressured, elk and other wildlife will have little reason to leave some of these crop areas as they have extensive feed and great bedding options.
With this area being predominantly private the biggest struggle for tag holders will be simply securing access. There are some small portions for public land hunting although these areas typically see a high amount of foot traffic and elk located in these areas are usually passing through. The best option for most hunters to consider will be hunting private lands that are enrolled in the Walk-in Hunting Access Program which provides public access to private lands.
There are several options for modern lodging located throughout the unit with the most being found in Manhattan and Junction City. Several primitive campsites can be found alongthe shores of Milford Lake. Groceries and sporting goods can be found in nearly every town and city throughout the unit and hunters will not need to be concerned with beingoverly prepared before leaving for the hunt.
