Once virtually extinct in Kansas, antelope have made a comeback, thanks to reintroductions funded by sport hunters. Modest numbers of antelope, perhaps 2,000 or so, live in the western part of the state, mostly south of Interstate 70. Seasons are held in Units 2, 17 and 18. Rifle and muzzleloader tags are limited, while archery tags are sold over the counter. Only residents may apply for rifle and muzzleloader permits. Not many bucks reach trophy size. The Boone and Crockett Club lists only five bucks large enough to qualify for all-time record-book listing and two others that exceed the minimum score for listing in the club’s three-year competition.
* Units are included if any part of the unit is in the county.
All tags are valid for bucks, does or fawns
A bowhunter may buy one tag over the counter
Half of all gun tags are issued to landowner/tenants
Only online applications are accepted
Successful applicants may view drawing results two to four weeks later
Unsuccessful applicants receive a preference point
Fluorescent orange clothing is required of hunters and helpers during gun seasons
Decoys are legal
Recent surveys indicate herds are increasing in size
Wildlife officials expect to issue more hunting permits in the near future
The ban against scopes during muzzleloader season has been lifted
Archery season has two segments — one before gun seasons and one after
All three units are open during archery season
Preference points are needed to draw rifle and muzzleloader permits
The first antelope season was held in 1974
