This unit is mostly remote, roadless terrain on the east side of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and includes lands south of Camas Creek and the Loon Creek drainage. Sheep hunters can drive to the edge of this unit and hike to reach ram country.

This is a good place for hunters looking for a wilderness experience.

This area is made up of some extremely steep mountains topped by Sleeping Deer Mountain at 9,881 feet in elevation. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River runs along the western edge of the unit. There are many large canyons and steep slopes with shale slides and other openings that permit long-range glassing. The Middle Fork flows at about 4,000 feet above sea level, emphasizing the extreme elevation changes in this unit.

The terrain is open, consisting of grassy slopes with scattered brush or timber patches, high mountain meadows, alpine basins and high, rugged and rocky mountains with many avalanche chutes and talus slopes. North and east-facing slopes and deep draws are timbered with spruces, pines and firs. Some areas have been burned by forest fires and are ideal for game with grass and browse plants taking hold as new trees begin to grow. Sheep can be seen anywhere in this unit but are most commonly seen in or near open areas and among sparse trees.

The majority of land is roadless, accessible only by horseback or foot. A popular 11-mile-long trail leads to the summit of Sleeping Deer Mountain. Hunters tend to scout country that can be seen by well-marked trails, so get off the beaten path if you want to see rams that are rarely seen by other hunters. Several airstrips are near this unit and have flying services including Sawtooth Flying Service, Arnold Aviation and McCall Aviation.

Motel lodging is too far from the area, so hunters can plan to stay in a tent. The best way to hunt sheep is typically from a spike camp consisting of either a small two to four-man tent or bivouac sacks. Guided horseback hunters usually use wall tent camps. Camping is allowed almost anywhere in the unit.
