Mountain goats are found in the high mountains of this unit, which is about 50 miles northeast of Boise and stretches between East Warrior and Mattingly peaks.
This area is not as high and rugged as other goat units, but long hikes are required to reach better goat habitats in this area.
This unit is located 50 miles northeast of Boise and is mostly in the Sawtooth Wilderness, stretching between East Warrior and Mattingly Peaks. Goats live primarily in the steepest and highest ridges and mountains in the area, usually found on or near rock slides and cliffs. Goats are typically seen above 8,500 feet and on the tops of the highest peaks and ridges. Mountains in the area include 9,921-foot Mattingly Peak, 9,608-foot Blizzard Mountain, 9,363-foot Greylock Mountain, 9,582-foot Nahneke Mountain East, 9,564-foot Nahneke Mountain West, 9,665-foot Flat Top Mountain and 9,368-foot Bald Mountain.
Timber is sparse above 8,500 feet and absent on some of the steepest slopes. High country has lichens, mosses, low shrubs, stunted conifers and wild grasses. Dense forests of spruce, fir and pine are found below the high country. Huckleberries, snowberries, white spirea, mallow ninebark, Oregon grape and other shrubs and forbs grow on forest floors.
Most of the land is public in the Boise National Forest and private property is not usually a disadvantage to hunters. The main road in the area is Middle Fork Road, which leads to Atlanta and branches into other primitive roads. Trailheads to ATV trails and motorcycle trails are at Flint, Decker, Grouse and Trail creeks. The trails snake southeast, and the Trail Creek trail, which starts as an ATV trail and morphs into a dirt bike trail, eventually winds southwest and then northwest to the north side of Bald Mountain. The most remote terrain in the southern part of the unit is found roughly 2 miles from dirt bike trails. The northern half of this area is in the Sawtooth Wilderness, which is closed to motor vehicles. Hunters must plan to hike to reach goat hunting areas. The easiest way to get to the Mattingly Peak area is from a trailhead west of Alturas Lake, which is located east of the unit.
Hunters typically pack in tents by foot or horseback and stay in remote, high terrain. Hunters can camp along dirt roads or dirt bike trails. Three campgrounds are in the unit, including Queens Creek Campground with four sites and two campgrounds near Atlanta. The closest lodging is Beaver Lodge in Atlanta.
