Located west of Challis and northwest of the Salmon River, this unit has excellent hunting for mountain goats.
Goats are usually found in narrow sections of high peaks and ridges, which can be easier to reach than goat habitat in many other goat hunting areas.
This unit is located west of Challis and the Salmon River. It is mostly mountainous and steep, although some high basins, meadows, valleys and ridges are flat to moderately steep. The Salmon River runs from about 5,920 feet near Sunbeam down to 4,670 feet just south of Ellis. High points can range from about 8,250 feet to more than 9,000 feet above sea level.
Goats typically live in the open, high mountains located in the western part of the unit. Most goat country is higher than 8,300 feet and is treeless or sparsely timbered. Some exposed rocks covered in mosses and lichens can be found in this area. Alpine terrain is covered with grasses, low shrubs and forbs. Below the high country are conifer forests, with spruce, firs and pines.
The Salmon-Challis National Forest manages most of the land in this area. Several thousand acres of private farm and ranch land are near Challis. Strips of private property can be found along the Salmon River. The main roads are U.S. Highway 93 and Idaho Route 75. Several forest roads leave these paved roads and lead into the mountains. The northern end can be accessed by Morgan Creek Road. The Challis Creek Road branches into forest roads and trails west of Challis. Part of this unit is west of the Yankee Fork Road, which provides access on the western edge.
Hunters can camp either at a trailhead or in the backcountry. More than 18 campgrounds are in this unit or on its boundaries in areas along U.S. Highway 93 and Idaho Route 75. Some campgrounds close in early fall. Mosquito Flat Campground is an interior campground near Mosquito Flat Reservoir. Lodging available in Challis includes Pioneer Motel and RV Park, Watermark Inn and Northgate Inn Motel.
