Moose hunters can expect to consistently take mature bulls in this unit, which consists of part of the Bannock Range south of Pocatello and parts of Arbon Valley to the west and Marsh Valley to the east.
Moose can get big in this area, and hunter success rates are high, so bull tags are hard to draw. The terrain here is good for glassing and altitudes are high enough that tracking in snow usually works out in late October and November.
Old Tom Mountain and Scout Mountain are the high points of the Bannock Range, which is mostly in the Caribou National Forest. Some of the high parts of the range are steep and rocky with sagebrush ridges to the west and east, but most slopes below 7,000 feet are not as steep. Some marshes and irrigated farm fields can be found in the low valleys.
Foothills are mostly covered with bunch grasses and other wild grasses like, sagebrush, serviceberry, rye grass, wheatgrass, bitterbrush and maple brush. A lot of fields are dry farmed, while others are irrigated, planted mainly in alfalfa and meadow grass. Junipers grow at middle elevations along with patches of aspen and conifers. On high north slopes grow pines, firs and spruces, while ridge tops and south-facing slopes are mainly covered with maple brush, chokecherries, grass, sagebrush, wildflowers and other forbs. Marshes are mostly full of cattails, bulrushes and phragmites.
Hunters can get within a couple of miles of most public land on access roads. Some slopes and canyons are hard to reach without hiking a mile or more. A main access route is South Mink Creek Road, which branches from the Bannock Highway from Pocatello and leads to other roads. One of those routes is Forest Road 1, which runs along the East Fork of Mink Creek toward the south and Scout Mountain. Another is Forest Road 163, which runs along the South Fork of Mink Creek along the western slope of the range. Scout Mountain Top Road can be reached from Mercer Creek Road on the west side of the Bannock Range.
Some hunters camp along dirt roads in this area. Scout Mountain Campground is usually open until Oct. 30. Lodging is available in Pocatello. Some that get good ratings are the Best Western Pocatello Inn, the Black Swan Inn, the Pocatello Hampton Inn & Suites and the Ameritel in Pocatello.
