Good populations of moose are found in this large unit located east of the town of Fairfield. A large variety of terrain types are found here including open and rolling prairie-type lands to steep and timbered mountain slopes.
Good moose hunting can be found here but bulls taken from this area rarely make it into the record books.
This area is made up of parts of the Boulder, Pioneer, and Smokey mountain ranges northeast of Fairfield. Foothills and flat land make up the southern half of the unit. The foothills are a mixture of private, BLM and state land, while the flats are mostly private pastures and farmland. High points include Old Hyndman Peak, Stanhope Peak, Kent Peak, and Buttercup Mountain. Most mountains are steep and even rugged.
Douglas firs, Engelmann and blue spruce, aspen, subalpine firs and pines grow above 6,500 feet on eastern and northern slopes. Huckleberries, snowberries, white spirea, mallow ninebark, Oregon grape and other shrubs and forbs grow on forest floors. Southern and western slopes are covered with grasses, sagebrush, willows, aspen in draws, serviceberry, chokecherry and maple bushes. Willows, birches, alders, grasses and sedges grow in wet areas. Most terrain above 9,000 feet is open with lots of rock slides in places and grassy, brushy basins and draws.
Much of the southern half of the unit is private, including most land along the Sun Valley Highway. Many farm fields are near Fairfield and south of Hailey. Foothills also are largely private. Public roads give access to most major drainages. There are a few miles of ATV trails, but most off-road trails are limited to horses or motorcycles.
Some hunters camp along dirt roads which is allowed almost anywhere on public land. Several campgrounds are in the unit like Pioneer Campground, which is 11 miles north of Fairfield on Forest Road 93. Iron Mountain RV Park is on Highway 20 in Fairfield. Elk Creek Highland Lodge is in Fairfield. Ketchum and Sun Valley have many lodging options, including Knob Hill Inn and Tamarack Lodge.
