This area is a small, roadless unit that has a scattered population of moose. Hunters that hunt hard usually fill their tags.
Moose typically have 40-45” racks but are difficult to hunt because of limited roads, scattered numbers and a lot of dense cover.
This unit is made up of steep to rolling mountains in the Cayuse Creek drainage. Some high ridges range from 7,000 to 7,660 feet including the Williams Range, Toboggan Ridge, Deer Ridge and Lunde Ridge. Cayuse Creek drops down to about 3,600 feet above sea level making for some climbs of 3,000-4,000 feet. Most of the mountains facing the creek are steep.
North slopes are timbered with spruces, firs, pines and cedars. South slopes are covered with scattered trees, brush, wild grasses and forbs. Some mountains, such as Gorman Hill, have a lot of long meadows and recovering burns. Moose favor the edges between heavily forested and open or sparsely forested areas.
Toboggan Ridge Road enters the unit on the northern edge at Clayton Creek and winds across Cayuse Creek and up onto Toboggan Ridge, providing moose hunters with excellent views of great terrain. The Lolo Trail provides access on most of the southern edge of the unit. The western end of the unit is mostly roadless.
