Mule deer, whitetail deer and elk are hunted in this area, which runs east from the farmlands near Rexburg to the watershed divide on the Big Hole Mountains. Hunters can buy some tags over the counter and must draw others.

Some big elk and mule deer live here. Muzzleloader hunters can hunt mule deer during the rut in November. The archery elk season is during the rut with the muzzleloader elk season starting before the rut ends in October.

Mild terrain and agricultural lowlands in the Snake River Valley in the west give way to rugged, deep drainages in the east. The high point is Garns Mountain at 9,016 feet. Big game animals live in a mixture of easy-to-glass farmlands in the low country, heavily timbered drainages are at mid-elevations and open ridges and peaks at high elevations.

Hunters need landowner permission to hunt much of the western half, which is largely private. The southeastern corner is part of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and is open to the general public. The forest can be accessed by several roads in the Moody Creek area in the west, Long Hollow Road past Kelly Canyon on the south and Canyon Creek Road in the north. These roads lead to several trailheads, some of which provide ATV access. Others are single-track trails that can be followed by foot and horse.

The west is mainly composed of alfalfa and grain fields with a few creeks surrounded by cottonwood trees. Lodgepole pines, Douglas firs and aspens grow at middle elevations. High country has grassy ridges and peaks with sparse and scattered conifers. Game animals find water from permanent springs and streams.

Most hunters use primitive camps and travel trailers along Forest Service roads 218 and 217 in the Kelly Canyon and Moody Creek areas. Mountain River Ranch in Heise and Green Canyon Hot Springs in Canyon Creek have campsites. Backpackers and horseback riders can enjoy uncrowded hunting in the Big Hole Mountains. Motels and hotels are in Rexburg.
