Elk, mule deer, a few antelope and whitetail live in this area which is east of Interstate 15 bordering Montana and rising from desert flats to mountains above timberline.

This area is made up of mountains and foothills with some desert flats. Most mountain slopes are steep and rugged with deep canyons where some terrain is too rough for deer and elk. The northern two-thirds of this area has hills and mountains while the southern third is mostly flat. Several peaks and ridges are higher than 9,500 in elevation, including Red Conglomerate Peaks South. Most of the high country in the west is lower than 8,500 feet.

The main roads are I-15 , Idaho Highway 22 and Idaho Highway 28. Some county and forest roads leave the main routes and follow creek bottoms and ridges to interior terrain. Most flat land in the northern and southern tips is private while most foothills are BLM land. Private land minimally blocks access to public land.

Sagebrush, forbs and wild bunchgrass cover the low hills, flatlands and higher country that faces south. Most of the land along I-15 is heavily forested with spruces, firs and pines. West of that are forests on most northern slopes with some high country open with grassy meadows and gradual slopes. The rough and rocky land above the tree line is covered with grasses and low shrubs with some lichens and mosses growing on the rocks.

Some hunters camp along dirt roads. Stoddard Creek Campground is near I-15 about halfway up the unit. The campground has 18 single units, two double units and a group campsite. Lodging available in Dubois at the southern edge of the unit includes Hernandez Motel and Cross Roads Motel.
