The Middle Fork Zone is located in central Idaho and comprised almost entirely of the Frank Chruch River of No Return Wilderness. This country is very remote, very rugged, and extremely difficult to hunt. Very few options for foot access are found into the unit and most hunters will need to be flown in or use livestock. Areas around airstrips can become crowded at times and hunters on foot will still need to work hard from that point to escape some of the pressure. This is not a great area to consider for a DIY style elk hunt.
This area is incredibly steep, rugged and remote. From the river bottom ridgelines climb steeply for several thousand feet. The terrain is generally fairly open although some dense stands of timber can be encountered. Glassing opportunities are good and will likely be the best means for hunters to initially locate elk. Physical preparation will be key for this hunt.
This area is almost entirely public land and short of actually entering the unit, access will not be a problem for hunters. The biggest hurdle for most will be physically accessing likely hunting locations. Everything is very steep and all access points will be from the river bottoms. The use of planes or livestock comprises the most common methods of accessing the area.
