The Lolo zone is found in north-central Idaho and lies along the Montana border. This area was once one of the most prolific elk areas in Idaho, and perhaps the west. Wolves have really taken a toll on herd numbers in this area and now hunting conditions are extremely tough. The country here is thick in vegetation and incredibly steep. Hunters who know this area still do decent but as a newcomer expect a large learning curve. Glassing opportunities can be found on some of the south-facing slopes but for the most part thick is going to be close quarters hunting.
This zone is almost entirely mountainous and full of public land for hunters to explore. Some alpine type areas can be found along the Montana border but most of the unit is extremely dense in vegetation and old-growth timber. Logging roads can be found throughout the area but hunters should still expect a good deal of climbing needed in order to reach hunting locations. Large and prominent ridgelines are common and are usually one of the better methods for initially accessing basins.
The units found within this zone are almost entirely public and hunters really have free roam here. A decent amount of gravel roads can be found throughout the area but hunters will still need to hike from these locations to reach desired hunting areas. Cross country travel can be difficult at times due to extreme vegetation and steep slopes. Early snowstorms can come in heavy in this area so hunters will want to be prepared.
