On The Ground

The small unit is found in central Colorado and lies along the southern edge of the Fossil Ridge Wilderness Area. Hunters will find a classic high country hunt here complete with rocky ridges, pocket lakes, and extreme elevations. With the early dates of this hunt, hunters will need to access some of the highest areas in the unit and physical readiness will be important.

This hunt is sure to provide a memorable hunt for any mountain hunter.

Terrain

The southern end of the unit is largely private grounds comprised of large open prairie type lands but this quickly changes as the northern end of the unit is mostly wilderness and home to jagged peaks, high alpine bowls and some extreme backcountry. Physically traversing some of the backcountry areas can be very tough to the extremeness of the terrain and the many cliff bands present in the high country.

  • 84% public land

  • Elevations range from 8,200 - 13,200 feet

Alpine basins above 11,000 feet are covered with wildflowers, alpine grasses, areas of barren ground willows, moss and lichens. Large stands of Douglas fir, blue spruce, pine and groves of aspen are broken up with open grassy parks. With a drop in elevation oak brush, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, aspen, willows, cottonwoods and mountain shrubs are visible on benches, ridges, gulches and creek bottoms.

Hunters will find thousands of acres of publically accessible ground here along with some incredible scenery. Finding access points into the high country will not be difficult but physically accessing these areas can be demanding and conditioning will be important.

There are a few options for modern lodging in Pitkin on the eastern side of the unit but most of the sleeping arrangements when hunting this unit will be primitive. Most hunters will opt to backpack hunt this unit to cut down on the constant elevation gain and loss. Very few sporting goods or groceries can be found within the unit and these needs will need to be met prior to the hunt beginning.
