On The Ground

The Rocky Mountain Bighorn herd found here is estimated to be close to 85. Bighorns reside along the Arkansas River between Cotopaxi and Parkdale just west of Canon City. The majority of bighorns are found on BLM lands.

Bighorn Canyon can be difficult to climb out of if rams are located on the upper walls. Limited roads on the north side of the river make reaching rams a challenge.

Terrain

Steep canyon walls with rock outcrops line the Arkansas River in Bighorn Canyon. A number of dry gulches deposit runoff into the river after thunderstorms drench the ground. Away from the river canyon, drainages near 11,000-foot peaks bring snow melt down to the Arkansas River. Arid rocky land can make travel difficult.

  • Roughly 265 square miles

  • 57.4% public land

  • Elevation from 5,522-11,710 feet

Pinyon/juniper, oak brush, willow, cottonwoods, sage, bunch grasses, yucca and prickly cactus can be found along or near the Arkansas River. As the elevation increases to the north aspen, ponderosa pine, some spruces and firs can also be found on ridges and mountain slopes. Wildflowers and lush grasses cover open parks.

U.S. Highway 50 travels next to the Arkansas River through Bighorn Canyon between Salida and Parkdale. Two county roads that cross the Arkansas River and head north are County Road 27 and County Road 12. In the northwest corner County Road 2, 11 and BLM Road 5760 lead to a BLM designated parking area near Gribbles Run.

BLM provides campgrounds at Rincon, Vallie Bridge and Five Points. Salida and Canon City provide motels, cafes, restaurants, medical facilities, gas and diesel. Texas Creek and Cotopaxi have limited gas and food options. Café Dawn, Shallots and Quincy’s can all be found in Salida.
