On The Ground
East of Meeker is the Flattops Herd estimated at 20 Rocky Mountain bighorns. Flattops Wilderness Area and White River National Forest provides a lot of public land for hunters.
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife estimate the Flattops herd is near 20 sheep. Rams can be very hard to locate on the walls of South Fork Canyon. Glass from the south side of the canyon for best results. This wilderness area is only accessed by foot or on horseback. Be aware of bears around campsites.
Terrain
The Flat Tops are on a large elevated plateau. Mountain basins and meadows contain over 110 lakes and some of the most extensive tundra areas in Colorado. The valleys here hold North and South Forks White River.

Vegetation
There are miles of alpine tundra carpeted with wildflowers, moss and lichens. Lakes in this unit are typically surrounded by willows, pine and steep slopes of spruce. Canyons have a lot of oak brush, pines and aspen. Along river bottoms are hay fields surrounded by cottonwood and willow.
Access
Flattops Wilderness Area is inside of the White River National Forest. Travel in the wilderness is restricted to foot or horseback. Major routes close to the wilderness are County Road 8 that travels east of Meeker along North Fork White River, then through Ripple Creek Pass toward Phippsburg. Coffee Pot Road at Interstate 70 and Colorado River Road heads to Deep Lake on the southern border, and Colorado Route 13/798 runs from Rifle to Craig and passes just west of Meeker.
Camping and Lodging
Motels, cabins and restaurants can be found in Meeker and provide lodging, as well. Medical facilities and gas and diesel are available. Numerous café and restaurants available with some open 24 hours.
