On The Ground

This unit is found in central Colorado just outside of the city of Colorado Springs. This is a fairly large area with mostly timbered and rough terrain perfect for sheep habitat. With the dense nature of the vegetation and the extremeness of some of the terrain, this will certainly be a unit to test a sheep hunters mental and physical fortitude. Hunters will find plenty of glassing opportunities within the unit but physically reaching these areas can come with a heavy tax.

Hunters can find good sheep hunting here but successfully punching a tag can be a test, both mentally and physically.

Terrain

A more open and gentle terrain type can be found along the southern and eastern edges of the unit but the general feel of the rest of the unit is steep, thick, and rugged. Various roads can be found leading into a few parts of the unit but much of the land is roadless. Traversing this roadless area can be physically exhausting with lots of climbing to be had.

  • 53% public land

  • Elevations range from 5,000-10,500 feet

Some tundra and alpine meadows with marshy spots are above timberline but most of this area is heavily forested. The highest elevations are forests of spruces, firs, bristlecone pines, lodgepole pines, and aspens. The mid elevation areas are primarily dominated by aspens and ponderosa pines. Pinyon/juniper forests and some wet meadows are scattered below in the low lying areas.

Hunters can reach some hunting areas by driving on a few roads that require four-wheel-drive vehicles or ATVs. Hunters can drive to high elevations, but should expect to hike to reach sheep. Hunters can use high-power optics to glass from main roads.

  • Four-wheel drive is recommended

  • Campfires are restricted to fire pits

Hunters will find plenty of modern lodging, sporting goods, and grocery options in the nearby city of Colorado Springs. Because of the remote nature of the unit many hunters will choose to spike or backpack camp.
