On The Ground

Peaks and basins in the southern portion of the Mount Evans Wilderness and along the Continental Divide are within the Pike National Forest. Thousands of acres are available to hunt a herd estimated at around 90 Rocky Mountain bighorns.

The season opens before Labor Day, so tourists, hikers, mountain bikers and backpackers will be on Mount Evans. Tag holders have numerous options outside of the Mount Evans Wilderness Area to plan a hunt. Watch for afternoon thundershowers.

Terrain

12,000 to 13,000 foot peaks, long drainages beginning at alpine lakes which cascade down steep slopes and rocky outcrops can make this area difficult to hunt. Geneva Creek has its headwaters at Shelf Lake and travels roughly ten miles before joining the North Fork of South Platte River near Grant.

  • Roughly 284 square miles

  • 66.5% public land

  • Elevations from 7,791-13,575 feet

Lower elevations have aspens, ponderosa pine, oak brush and cottonwoods near creeks. Stands of spruce, pine, fir, aspens and open parks are scattered below the timberline. Alpine slopes are covered with wildflowers, moss, lichens and barren ground willows near lakes and creeks.

The Arapaho National Forest, Pike National Forest and southern portion of the Mount Evans Wilderness combine to make up thousands of acres of public lands. Wilderness travel is restricted to foot or horseback. Major roads include U.S. 285 and Guanella Pass Road. County Road 1038 and 43 are roads that head into the mountainous areas.

Pike National Forest improved campgrounds include Burning Bear, Whiteside, Geneva Park, Deer Creek and Meridian. Evergreen, Bailey and E 470 Corridor along Front Range provide motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cafes, restaurants, medical facilities, gas and diesel. Evergreen bed and breakfasts available include The Cabins at Cabin Creek and Bears Inn Bed and Breakfast.
