On The Ground

Southwest of Pueblo, sits the Wet Mountains and thousands of public acres on the San Isabel National Forest. Two distinct areas are known for producing rams, North Hardscrabble Creek and Greenhorn Mountain. Expect to hunt in steep and rough terrain which can exceed 12,000 feet.

Terrain

Green Mountain sits on the Wet Mountains at over 12,000 feet. The Huerfano River flows along the southern edge while North Hardscrabble Creek drains the northern portion. Steep canyons, long drainages, dry gulches and open parks create a good hunting area.

  • Roughly 792 square miles

  • 31.9% public land

  • Elevations from 4,662-12,374 feet

Mountains consist of ponderosa pine, aspen, spruce and fir along with open grassy parks. Sagebrush, oak brush, mountain mahogany, pinyon/juniper, cottonwood and grasses cover the foothills and open high prairie.

San Isabel National Forest offers many trails and forest service roads off Colorado Route 165. Use Forest Service Road 400 to connect with 403 leading to Greenhorn Mountain. Colorado Route 96 travels west out of Wetmore to Mackenzie Junction. There are good hiking trails throughout most of the backcountry.

  • Four-wheel drive is recommended

Improved and dispersed camping is available in the national forest. The city of Pueblo offers a wide variety of motels, hotels, restaurants, gas, diesel and medical care. The smaller communities like Colorado City, Rye, Beulah and Westcliffe have cafes, limited motels and fuel.
