On The Ground
This area is located between Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and Woodland Park. Bighorn sheep rams in this unit are known for their horn growth and ability to keep a good population. Hunters can see and harvest rams that score in the 170” Boone and Crockett range.
This herd is known for the size of rams and the ability to keep numbers high. Recent fires in the area have opened up new sheep country and will bring more sheep onto public ground. Sheep are difficult to hunt due to urban development and city parks located in the southeast end of the unit. This unit is an archery only unit. This unit is physically easy access for a sheep hunt.
Terrain
Sheep tend to gravitate toward Colorado Springs city limits during the hunting season. With rolling hills to the south, hunters toward the east need to focus their efforts on that part of the unit, and be physically ready to make a move when sheep move onto public ground. Sheep can be viewed from local roads and parks, giving a hunter opportunity to judge rams and possible access points.
Roughly 146 square miles
64.8% public land
Elevations from 6,000-9,727 feet
Vegetation
Higher elevations of this unit contain steep slopes covered in mountain mahogany, oak brush, Douglas fir, ponderosa pine and spruce trees. Lower elevations have rock outcroppings with pinyon/juniper and oak brush patches. Urban development areas and Queens Canyon quarry offer a nice view landscape. Recent fires in the Waldo Canyon area have opened up a lot more sheep habitat which can help bring sheep onto public land.
Access
One of the physically easier sheep units to access due to the sheep living near city limits. Foot trails around the city of Colorado Springs and Manitou springs offer best access to sheep, hunters may access trailheads with highway vehicles. OHV and dirt roads are located in the unit, but are not very useful because of the location of sheep. Winter storms can make access difficult because of deep snow. From the southeast portion of the unit, Highway 24 is the main travel route with gold camp road and bear creek road splitting off of it. Rampart range road will take from north to south of the unit.
Camping and Lodging
Colorado Springs and Monument offer lodging, restaurants, gas, groceries and places to buy needed hunting gear. Camping is permitted on most public lands.
