Terrain

McCurdy, Bison Peaks and North and South Tarryall Peaks are all within Tarryall Mountain Range. Puma Hills in the southern part of this area reaches 10,000 feet on Stoll and Pulver Mountains. Two major drainages that take snow melt and rains towards the South Platte River are Tarryall and South Fork Wigwam Creeks. La Salle, Wilkerson and Hankins Pass allow for travel between drainages and mountains. Lizard Rock, Hourglass Burn, Lake and McCurdy Parks can also be found within this area.

  • Roughly 373 square miles

  • 84% public land

  • Elevations from 7,927-12,431 feet

Buffalo and blue grama grasses cover the rangelands of South Park. Foothills are forested with ponderosa, lodgepole, aspens, bunch grass, oak brush, bitterbrush and mountain mahogany covering slopes. As elevation climbs, the north facing slopes have dense stands of spruce, fir, pine and areas of lush grassy parks. Above the timberline in the Tarryall Range wildflowers, lichens and mosses cover the tundra.

The Pike National Forest and the southern portions of the Lost Creek Wilderness Area have miles of trails offering large amounts of public lands. U.S. Highway 285 and U.S. Highway 24 connect to county roads leading to trailheads into wilderness area and national forest. County Road 90 connects with 92 and heads towards Eleven Mile Reservoir through Caylor Gulch.

Pike National Forest provides improved campgrounds in Eleven Mile Canyon and along Tarryall Creek. Eleven Mile State Parks offers nine separate camping areas near or on the shores of Eleven Mile Reservoir. Hartsel and Lake George offer limited options for gas, diesel or food. Fairplay offers a variety of choices for motels, cabins, cafés, restaurants, limited medical care and 24/7 gas and diesel.
