On The Ground
Located south of Creede and west of Wolf Creek Pass are thousands of wilderness and national forest lands that provide a remote mountainous home to a stable Rocky Mountain bighorn herd.
This terrain in this unit is rugged and remote. The Weminuche Wilderness is one of the wildest locations in the lower 48. The long and difficult trails make this a hard hunt.
Terrain
13,000 foot peaks surround many over 12,000 feet. These peaks are the headwaters to South Fork Rio Grande River, West San Juan River and many other drainages that connect with the Rio Grande River. Table top mountains, deep canyons, long gulches, broad open parks and falls can all be found within this area.
Roughly 559 square miles
94.4% public land
Elevations from 7,678-13,148 feet
Vegetation
Alpine basins are filled with wildflowers, mosses, lichens, barren ground willows and stunted pines. The timbered slopes have spruce, fir, lodgepole pine and grassy parks. The ridges and drainages have aspen, ponderosa pine with oak brush, mountain mahogany and willows in lower elevations.
Access
The Weminuche Wilderness Area portion of the San Juan National Forest can be reached by foot or horseback. The Rio Grande National Forest has numerous forest service roads available. Main highway access is off of Colorado Route 149 and U.S. Highway 160. Many county and forest service roads lead to trailheads or drainages.
Weminuche Wilderness travel and camping restrictions can be found online
Camping and Lodging
Both national forests offer improved campgrounds. Camping in Weminuche is allowed. South Fork and Creede offer limited motels, fuel and cafés. Pagosa Springs has a wide variety of motels, restaurants, medical facilities and fuel options.
