Mount Evans, located west of Denver, estimated population of 60 mountain goats. This unit restricts hunting to weekdays only. Resident only permits in 2017, due to declining population in recent years.
Patience in selecting the right trophy will aid in having an enjoyable hunt. This can be a great unit for goats with horns in the 8-10” range.
Mount Evans and Bierstadt, both reaching 14,000 feet, can be seen from along the Front Range and eastward towards Kansas. Steep basins give way to Chicago, Bear, Deer, Scott Gomer, Lake Fork and Tumbling Creeks, which all carry snow melt towards either South Platte River or Clear Creek. 11,000 foot Guanella Pass is at the head of Geneva Park. A number of lakes and reservoirs can be found within the area.
The Mount Evans wilderness contains small areas of arctic tundra, which account for many small pools of water above 12,000 feet. Stands of Bristlecone pines and Krummholz can be found close to timberline. Alpine basins are covered with wildflowers, lichens and moss. Below the treeline forests of spruce, fir and pine are broken up by open grassy parks. Aspen, ponderosa and lodgepole pine covers the lower elevations. Some willow and cottonwoods line creek bottoms.
Echo Lake and West Chicago Creek Campgrounds offer a total of 33 sites. In the Pike National Forest Whiteside, Burning Bear and Geneva Park have a total of 45 sites. Idaho Springs and Georgetown along Interstate 70 offer motels, cafés, limited medical facilities, gas and diesel.
