On The Ground

A large expanse of agricultural land. Antelope are scarce, mule deer are healthy and stable and whitetails live in a small part of the unit. Elk sightings are rare.

Hunters need to obtain access permission before seasons begin. Extremely long whitetail season allows hunters to pursue a buck until they fill their tag. Elk are rarely encountered due to very low numbers.

Terrain

The eastern third is made up of sand hills broken up by irrigated fields. Much of the western portion is dryland farming on rolling prairie, leaving the middle a combination of rolling, dry farmland and irrigated fields. Dry or intermittent creek beds are noticeable within the entire area. More than 70,000 acres of state land is controlled by the state land board, but are closed to public.

  • Roughly 1,791 square miles

  • 5% public land

  • Elevations from 3,448-4,511 feet

Dry or irrigated agricultural crops of wheat, corn and sunflowers dominate many areas. Sagebrush, yucca plants, Russian thistle and short grasses grow on cultivated land. Some long prairie grass grows on the Conservation Reserve lands (CRP).

State land consisting of some 150 acres includes Holyoke – south on US Highway 385 then west on County Road 14, Frenchman Creek – east of Holyoke on US Highway 6 and south on County Road 29.

US Highway 385 and County Road 59 head north and south between US Highways 34 and 6 which create the north and south boundary. There are many secondary and county roads that intersect with these major routes.

  • Trucks useful on rutted secondary roads for ground clearance

Wray, Holyoke, Yuma and Haxtun provide gas, cafes, medical facilities and dated motels. Julesburg and Sterling, along Interstate 76 have modern motels, various restaurants and hospitals.
