On The Ground

Located on the southwest corner of Denver, this unit has healthy herds of elk and mule deer. The unit is covered by private property, so hunters need to gain access before hunting. Those that have access with have the chance to chase mature bucks and bulls

Hunters willing to hunt hard, and gain access to private property will have a chance at mule deer bucks but elk in this unit are below average. This is a private land unit; gain access before you obtain a tag.

Terrain

The eastern part of the unit is the Denver valley covered in houses. Leading out of the valley there are rolling foothills leading to the larger mountains. Throughout the mountains are large flats and meadows. There are some steep creek drainages winding though the unit that have heavily forested sides.

  • Roughly 278 square miles

  • 10.9% public land

  • Elevation from 5,300-10,000 feet

Low to middle elevations. Flats with rolling hills covered in sagebrush, grass, ponderosa and oak brush. Middle and higher elevations. Mostly spruce and fir trees mixed with large, scattered aspen groves along with flats covered with grass and wildflowers on ridge tops.

Primitive four-wheel drive roads and ATV trails branch off a few well-maintained roads that access much of the unit. The unit is primarily private with no public access.

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

  • Limited access and private land in most of the unit

Good camping sites on some of the private property are near hunting areas. With half of the unit including the suburbs of Denver, there are unlimited options for lodging and services.
