On The Ground

Located in the north central part of the state, this unit has diverse landscape lending itself to many different big game animals. Elk, mule deer and antelope have healthy herds, giving hunters a chance at mature bucks and bulls. The moose are some of the best that Colorado has to offer.

Terrain

One of the most diverse units that Colorado has to offer. In the valley floor there are low rolling flats and ridges. Out of the valley, there are foothills heading toward alpine peaks. Many of the peaks are above timberline. Off of the peaks are steep creek drainages leading back down to the valley floor.

  • Roughly 256 square miles

  • 68.6% public land

  • Elevations from 8,000-12,500 feet

Low elevations have rolling hills covered with sagebrush and grass, along with scattered cottonwood trees along creeks. Middle elevations consist of spruce and fir trees mixed with large, scattered aspen groves along with flats covered with grass and wildflowers on ridges. High elevations have steep slopes leading to the peaks above timberline that are covered in grass, wildflowers and loose scrabble.

There are a few primitive four-wheel-drive roads and ATV trails branch off of well-maintained roads that access much of the national forest land. Backcountry trails are marked for hiking and horseback riding. There are some areas of the lower elevations that are private property. Owl Mountain State Wildlife Area is open to hunting. The Never Summer Wilderness is located in the mountains on the southeast side of the unit and is limited to foot and horse travel only.

  • Good public access, but limited vehicle access

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

To camp in the wilderness and much of the high country, you must backpack or pack in with horses. Good camping sites on public land along roads and are near hunting areas, so expect to see other hunters. Walden is located on the north end of the unit and offers limited lodging.

  • Be familiar with rules for camping in wilderness areas

  • Test backpacking gear in advance
