On The Ground
Heading south or southwest out of Kim the Comanche National Grassland provides the best access to mule deer and antelope. Most whitetails like the cottonwood lined creek bottoms. Small numbers of elk are also found on this unit.
There is a substantial fee to hunt deer on private land and the majority of private land is leased to outfitters.
Terrain
The land consists of gently rolling plains that change quickly to broad mesas, deep canyons and creeks.

Vegetation
Shortgrass prairie along with sagebrush, yucca, prickly cactus and oak brush lead to areas of pinyon/juniper, pines and cottonwood.
Access
Comanche National Grasslands-Carrizo Unit is about 25 square miles consisting of many isolated sections of open plains is reached off of U.S. Highway 160 southwest and east of Kim.
Camping and Lodging
Trinidad 59 miles west, Springfield 50 miles northeast and La Junta 58 miles north are the closest town that offer a variety of motels and restaurants, gas, diesel and medical facilities. Kim on US Highway 160 has limited food and gas available on weekdays.
