On The Ground

Northeast of Kim are canyons, creeks and dry farmlands that mule deer, antelope and elk reside in year-round. The majority of public land is on Comanche National Grasslands.

Mule deer are near crops, pinyon/juniper areas and steep canyons. Bull elk are very low in numbers and may be hard to find. It is difficult to gain access to private land.

Terrain

Northern portion has a number of long steep canyons carving through flat open prairie. Smaller canyons, mesas, creeks and miles of open prairie dominate the middle portion. The southern portion is made up of Comanche National Grasslands.

  • Roughly 578 square miles

  • 14.2% public land

  • Elevations from 4,397-5,617 feet

Areas of shortgrass prairie consisting of buffalo and blue grama, sand sage, yucca, prickly cactus, pinyon/juniper, arroyos and small patches of cottonwoods make up the landscape. Some dryland crops and Conservation Reserve Programs (CRP) lands are in the northern and southern areas.

Comanche National Grassland, Carrizo Unit providing over 26,000 acres is located north of US Highway 160, between Kim and Pritchett and is home to some mule deer and antelope. Heading south out of Las Animas Colorado Route 101 connects with US Highway 160 at Pritchett. US Highway 160 then heads west toward Kim and connects with Colorado Route 109 that travels north toward La Junta. These roads connect with many county and secondary roads that lead into prairie and canyonlands.

  • In remote country carry extra gas, water and food

  • Caution crossing low areas on county and secondary roads during thunderstorms

  • Rough terrain requires four-wheel-drive traction

Trinidad, Springfield, La Junta, Las Animas are large communities 50-70 miles away providing motels, restaurants, groceries, gas, diesel and medical facilities. Kim has a gas station and food during the week.
