On The Ground
East and southeast of Colorado Springs elk, mule deer, whitetails and antelope roam on 100% private or leased state land where access is restricted.
Access to Fountain Creek may be difficult to obtain from ranchers and hunters will have to pay trespass fees.
Terrain
Large expanse of flat prairie with gently rolling hills, buttes, gullies and a few small reservoirs describe this area. Fountain, Jimmy Camp, Chico and Williams Creeks are main drainages.
Roughly 503 square miles
32.4% public land
Elevations from 5,250-6,280 feet
Vegetation
Shortgrass prairie interspersed with sand hills covered by sagebrush, yucca and prickly cactus. Cottonwoods flourish along creek bottoms.
Access
Interstate 25, Colorado Route 94 and South Yoder Road connect with many county and secondary roads. Turkey Track Ranch, an 8,887-acre tract east of Fountain on Squirrel Creek Road allows access from designated parking areas. Deer and antelope are often found on this property.
County and secondary roads get slick and rutted in wet weather
High winds and snow create ground blizzards
Camping and Lodging
Colorado Springs has many motels, a variety of restaurants, RV Parks, two major hospitals, gas stations, repair shops and an airport. Communities of Security and Fountain provide motels, restaurants and gas.
