On The Ground
This unit is located in the northwest corner of the state and just outside of the town of Meeker. Hunters will find good opportunities here with ample amounts of public land and good game densities. A good road system will be found here but this unit also offers a few roadless areas including the Cross Mountain, Black Mountain and Windy Gulch Wilderness study areas.
Good game densities can be found here along with a healthy trophy potential for each. Hunting on public land can be good but hunters will need to cover ground and be on their optics throughout the day.
Terrain
This area is largely comprised of long rolling ridgelines and mesas. Vegetation cover is generally fairly light but most of the drainages will grow heavily in underbrush and some timber. Hunters will find little trouble in covering ground in most areas but some rougher terrain can be encountered.
Roughly 610 square miles
67.2% public land
Elevations from 5,900-8,020 feet
Vegetation
Upper elevations have pinyon pines and junipers along with oak brush and sagebrush, while the lower elevations are covered in sagebrush and grasses. Bitterbrush, serviceberry and other shrubs provide browse for big game.
Access
Roads branch from US Highway 40 in the north, leading to BLM land and state wildlife areas. Access is also good off State Highway 64 in the south and Winter Valley Gulch Road, the western boundary, which runs through Coal Creek. Hunters can use ATVs and 4x4 trucks on BLM roads and trails that go almost anywhere in the unit except for the Cross Mountain, Black Mountain and Windy Gulch wilderness study areas, where vehicles are not allowed.
Bring your ATV or off-highway vehicles
Bring tire chains, a shovel and extra fuel
Camping and Lodging
Hunters will generally opt for primitive camping options throughout the unit, generally on BLM lands. Some modern lodging can be found outside of the unit boundaries in the town of Meeker on the south side of the unit. Careful planning may be necessary due to the remoteness of other locations in the unit.
