On The Ground

Located southeast of Denver and northeast of Colorado Springs with a few localized herds of elk, numerous mule deer and antelope. Land is about 91% private making access an issue for some hunters outfitters have large tracts of leased land offering hunting opportunities.

Terrain

Flat prairie gives way to gentle rolling hills with numerous mesas and buttes. The area is also distinguished by many long gulches such as Water, Willow, Cattle, Godfrey East and Spring. Noted intermittent drainages are Kiowa, west, east and Middle Bijou and Big Sandy Creeks.

The majority of cover consists of shortgrass prairie, sagebrush, oak brush, ponderosa pine, cottonwood, willow and dry land agricultural crops.

Jumping Cow SWA, 14,733 acres follow Colorado Highway 86 east of Kiowa to County Road 105 and 122.

  • Access by permit only

  • Hunters must have a valid license for their activity prior to applying for a permit

  • Permits must be carried at all times while on the property

  • Permits may designate specific hunting zones, if so, they are restricted to the listed zone and are not valid property-wide

  • Permits are free and available through drawing process

  • Motor vehicle use only allowed on marked existing roadways leading to marked parking areas

  • All other access is by foot and horseback only.

Interstate 70, Colorado Route 86 and County Road 53 intersect a good country road system that provides access across the unit.

Communities of Limon on eastern edge, Elbert and Kiowa along the western boundary, and Byers in the north, along with other smaller towns provide limited lodging, gas and food. The major population centers of Denver and Colorado Springs are 30-60 miles away and have motels, hotels, restaurants, gas, diesel and medical facilities.
