On The Ground
The Lake Pillsbury zone is north of Clear Lake in the Mendocino National Forest, sprinkled with private land with Lake Pillsbury at its center.
Elk within this hunt area occur on private and public property, with moderate access to public ground. The private lands within the hunt area boundary are open to elk hunting only with the written permission of the landowner.
Terrain
The elevations are not extreme but the vegetation and ravines of the unit can be barriers to an effective harvest. The unit is a mixture of multiple types of land ownership which makes access to public lands difficult at times.
Roughly 468 square miles
77% public land
Elevations range from 1,500 – 6,100 feet
Vegetation
The vegetation is highly varied throughout the zone ranging from mixed chaparral, oak-woodland, and hardwood-conifer to dense conifer habitats.
Access
The main access road on the south side of the zone is Highway 20. There are several well maintained forest route roads that intersect through the zone with a less maintained roads branching from them.
Camping and Lodging
There are several scattered campgrounds throughout the zone, along with a few areas that will permit primitive camping. There are some cabin rentals near the larger lakes in the zone.
Please, DO NOT camp or hunt for prolonged periods near water sources important to wildlife and livestock. Remaining for over 30 minutes and within 200 yards of an artificial water source including guzzlers or horizontal wells on public lands within California is a Fish and Game violation.
