The Grizzly Island zone is located in the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area northeast of San Francisco next to Grizzly Bay, between I-80 and the Delta, within the Suisun Marsh.
This is the prized jewel of elk hunts in California. The elk herd on Grizzly Island are the heaviest and healthiest Tule Elk in the state.
The terrain is flat and near sea level. There’s not really any topography to speak of, but the wetlands and marshy habitat can make travel difficult.
The vegetation in the area is primarily wetlands and flooded marshes. The dense, thick vegetation can make seeing and accessing animals difficult.
Tag holders and their one non-hunting companion will be allowed to drive their vehicles on designated roads to the various parking areas and campsite/animal processing area. Designated roads are: Grizzly Island Road, Red House Road, and Pole Line Road. No motorized vehicles are allowed off designated roads in the hunt area.
You can drive on designated roads only. Topography is flat and near sea level but do NOT mistake that for easy walking as the nearby fields will be flooded for the incoming waterfowl and MUCK boots are needed.
Tag holders will be allowed to camp (no hook-ups) with a self-contained travel trailer, motorhome, camper, camp trailer, or tent at the “elk pen” camping area. This is also the designated animal processing area. Campfires and/or charcoal barbecues are NOT allowed (portable gas stoves only).
The camp area is highly recommended for camping and is in a nice Eucalyptus grove.
If you do camp, prepare for SERIOUS mosquitos. Get a couple of Thermacells and some good spray.
