Zone X-2 located primarily in portions of Modoc County with a small portion in Siskiyou County.

The feral horse population has exploded in this zone and it's sometimes difficult to get away from them. They also have a negative effect on the meadows & watering holes in this zone.The roads in the timber are decent, but the roads across the rocky juniper flats will eat a stock truck. An ATV/UTV is a must in those areas.

Located in the northeast corner of the state bordering Oregon. Contains mostly Modoc National Forest with many small water bodies plus Clear Lake Reservoir and National Wildlife Refuge, Goose Lake, and Big Sage Reservoir. Mostly sage, juniper, and volcanic rock.

The vegetation is highly varied throughout Zone X-2 ranging from low sage, sagebrush, bitterbrush, aspen, and juniper to hardwood-conifer habitats.

There are extensive tracts of public lands with excellent access in Zone X-2. Primary roadways in Zone X- 2 are State Highway 139 (western X-2), State Highway 299 (southern X-2), State Highway 395 (eastern X-2), County Road 73 (Crowder Flat Road north from Alturas), and County Road 48 (west from Davis Creek).

Zone X-2 contains a mixture of both public and private lands. Public lands within Zone X-2 are administered by the Modoc National Forest (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

There are numerous designated campgrounds within Zone X-2. The facilities available at these campgrounds vary from primitive campsites to campsites with running water and showers. Camping outside of designated campgrounds is permitted on BLM and USFS lands. However, during fire season special regulations may apply and it will be necessary to obtain a fire permit from the USFS or BLM.
