On The Ground

Zone D-13 located in portions of Kern, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties.

This area is a major urban population. Chances are high that you'll just be "enjoying time in nature" and others.

Terrain

The terrain in this zone varies from flat bottom land to rolling hills, up into some mountainous canyon country.

  • Roughly 1,319 square miles

  • 65% public land

  • Elevations range from 500 – 8,800 feet

The vegetation is highly varied throughout Zone D-13 ranging from oak-woodland, mixed chaparral, juniper-pinyon, hardwood, hardwood-conifer and dense conifer to desert habitats.

Although there is a lot of private land in Zone D-13, there are extensive tracts of public lands with excellent access. Primary roadways in Zone D-13 include Interstate 5 (eastern) and Highways 33, 126 and 166.

Zone D-13 contains a mixture of both public and private lands. Public lands within the Zone D-13 are primarily administered by the Los Padres National Forest.

Wilderness lands have been established within the Los Padres National Forest. The Sespe and Chumash Wilderness Areas are accessible by hiking and pack stock. Public use of the wilderness is regulated by permit. Information on wilderness area restrictions and Wilderness Permits may be obtained by contacting the Los Padres National Forest.

Within the Sespe Wilderness Area is the Sespe Condor Sanctuary which is closed to public access.

You need a parking permit to park! The Federal Government, through the USFS, requires a Forest Adventure Pass and Wilderness Pass in possession if you intend to park your vehicle and use the USFS public lands for any purpose.

There are numerous designated campgrounds within Zone D-13. The facilities available at these campgrounds vary from primitive campsites to campsites with running water and showers.
