Zone 3 is located in portions of Lassen and Modoc counties in the northeast part of California.

The feral horse population has exploded in this zone and it's sometimes difficult to get away from them. They also have a negative effect on the meadows & watering holes in this zone.The roads in the timber are decent, but the roads across the rocky juniper flats will eat a stock truck. An ATV/UTV is a must in those areas.

This is a large unit with various types of terrain. The valley floors are flat with rolling hills mixed with some farm or agricultural areas. Rolling hills lead up to the higher mountains with a little bit of canyon country. Some of the higher altitudes can have steep and rugged terrain.

The vegetation is highly varied throughout the zone ranging from low sage, sagebrush, bitterbrush, mixed and montane chaparral, aspen, hardwood-conifer, and juniper habitats.

There are extensive tracts of public land with excellent access in Zone 3. Primary roadways in Zone 3 are State Route 395 (central Zone 3) and State Route 299 (central Zone 3). Many County, USFS, and BLM roads branch off of these primary roadways providing excellent access to public lands. The weather is usually quite hot and dry, but summer thunderstorms are not uncommon. Thunderstorms can make roads very difficult, if not impossible, to travel.

Zone 3 contains a mixture of both public and private lands. Public lands within the zone are administered by the United States Forest Service.

There are numerous designated campgrounds within Zone 3. The facilities available at these campgrounds vary from primitive campsites to campsites with running water. Camping outside of designated campgrounds is usually permitted on BLM and USFS lands. However, during fire season, special regulations may apply and it will be necessary to obtain a fire permit from the USFS or BLM. You can also check with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection office for rules in specific areas.

Please DO NOT CAMP at springs or other water sources that are important to wildlife and livestock. Remaining at artificial wildlife water sources (guzzlers) can be a Fish and Wildlife violation.
