Quick Tips

  • Conditions during the antelope hunting season can be quite warm. It is critical you are prepared to properly care for the meat if you harvest an animal
  • The most comprehensive map of the area is the Klamath National Forest map
  • BLM surface management maps may also be useful. The BLM surface management maps for Zone 1 are the McArthur, Mount Shasta, Tule Lake, and Yreka maps

On The Ground

Located in the northeast corner of California, all of Zone 1 is located in Siskiyou county.

Antelope hunting in California can be great if you can get a permit. With only a handful of permits issued, you won’t have too much competition out in the field.

Terrain

This is a large unit with various types of terrain. The valley floors are flat with rolling hills mixed with some farm or agricultural areas. Rolling hills lead up to the higher mountains with a little bit of canyon country. Some of the higher altitudes can have steep and rugged terrain.

  • Roughly 2,372 square miles

  • 51% public land

  • Elevations range from 2,500-14,000 feet

The vegetation is highly varied throughout the zone ranging from low sage, sagebrush, bitterbrush, mixed and montane chaparral, aspen, hardwood-conifer, and juniper habitats.

There are extensive tracts of public land with excellent access in Zone 1. Primary roadways in Zone 1 are Interstate 5 (western Zone 1), State Route 97 (central Zone 1), and State Route 89 (southern Zone 1). Many County, USFS and BLM roads branch off of these primary roadways providing excellent access to public lands. The weather is usually quite hot and dry, but summer thunderstorms are not uncommon. Thunderstorms can make roads very difficult, if not impossible, to travel.

Zone 1 contains a mixture of both public and private lands. Public lands within the zone are administered by the United States Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.

There are numerous designated campgrounds within Zone 1. The facilities available at these campgrounds vary from primitive campsites to campsites with running water. Camping outside of designated campgrounds is usually permitted on BLM and USFS lands. However, during fire season special regulations may apply and it will be necessary to obtain a fire permit from the USFS or BLM.
