On The Ground
Both the eastern and western subunits of Unit 44A offer trophy-size desert bighorn sheep and a few mule deer. Mountains rise steeply to elevations that are thousands of feet higher than the flat desert.
Subunits 44A East and 44A West provide excellent desert bighorn sheep hunting and fair mule deer hunting. It is also possible to find elk in this unit, which can be taken via the state's over-the-counter elk hunt.
Terrain
Most sheep live in rough and rocky mountains that rise steeply high above desert flats. Large washes cut through lowlands. Some agricultural fields attract mule deer, but they are mostly found in the lower elevations of the various mountain ranges in the unit.
Roughly 2,360 square miles
91.5% public land
Elevations from 400-5,600 feet
Rocky desert mountains can be challenging to hike
Several river drainages are found within the unit
Vegetation
Riparian areas with some heavy vegetation are along the Colorado, Bill Williams, Big Sandy and Santa Maria rivers. Creosote flats, mesquite, palo verde, saguaros, grasses and chaparral grow at middle and high elevations.
Access
BLM and state lands are open to the public. Private land restricts access in parts of the unit. The Harcuvar Mountains have limited access. Parts of Havasu National Wildlife Refuge are open to hunting.
The following mountains have wilderness areas where vehicles are prohibited:
Rawhide
Trigo
Harcuvar
Swansea
Gibraltar
Arrastra
East Cactus Plain (also closed to vehicles)
Camping and Lodging
Most hunters camp along dirt roads. Lodging and services are in Parker, Bouse, Salome, Wenden and Aguila. Developed campgrounds include:
La Paz County parks in Parker and Salome (Centennial)
Buckskin Mountain and River Island State Parks near Parker
Alamo Lake State Park
