Mostly open, flat terrain with private and state land arranged in a checkerboard pattern. Good numbers of antelope, but low numbers of elk and even lower numbers of deer.

Long known for its high quality bull elk hunting, this unit also provides good hunting for big antelope. Mule deer hunting quality has also improved in recent years. Deer tags are also valid in Unit 3C, which generally produces deer than Unit 3A. Be aware of the private land boundaries.

Generally a flat unit with a limited amount of broken topography and hills.

A mix of state, BLM and private land is arranged in a checkerboard pattern in much of the unit with National Forest property in the southwest. There are several dirt roads, but hunters need permission to use those that cross through private land.

Southwest corner is pinyon/juniper woodland. Toward the north and the east, vegetation transitions to high grasslands with scattered junipers.

Most hunters camp along Forest Service and BLM roads, while others stay in motels in Snowflake, Holbrook, Heber and Concho.
