On The Ground

Stable numbers of Coues deer live in the high parts of three mountain ranges—Sierrita, Cerro Colorado and Las Guijas. Desert mule deer live in the low, rolling foothills and Sonoran desert flats and valleys. Illegal immigrants often travel through this unit, so make sure vehicles and campsites are secure.

This unit has both Coues deer and desert mule deer. Be prepared to encounter Border Patrol agents and illegal immigrants. There is good access despite a great deal of private land.

Terrain

Grasslands, ravines and Sonoran desert are below mild foothills, rocky hillsides and steep, rocky mountains, including the Sierrita, Cerro Colorado and Las Guijas mountains. High terrain is moderately steep to extremely steep.

  • Roughly 618 square miles

  • 71.5% public land

  • Elevations from 2,500 near Three Points to 6,188-foot Keystone Peak

Sonoran desert scrub, cactus and grasslands at low elevations. Oak, chaparral and ocotillo cactus at high elevations.

Considering the amount of private land, public access is good. Some roads are closed, so hunters must hike to reach some of good hunting areas. State trust land, limited BLM property and the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge are open to big game hunters.

  • ATVs are helpful on rough, rocky and steep roads

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended

  • No quail and predators allowed on Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge

Hunters may camp on Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge as well as state land and BLM property. Lodging is in Tucson, Green Valley, Amado, Arivaca and Three Points/Robles Junction. RV parks are in Tucson, Green Valley and Arivaca.
