On The Ground

Unit 30B lies in southeast Arizona and is over 40% private land. Private land will restrict access across much of the unit and require hunters to arrange access prior to their hunt. Mule deer live across the unit in the lower elevations. Coues deer are found in low numbers on two different mountains. Illegal immigration encounters can be an issue.

Private land make access a challenge and can frustrate mule deer hunters. Illegal immigration from Mexico can make camping risky. This unit has lower Coues deer numbers compared to other adjacent units and mule deer and Coues deer can be found in the same areas.

Terrain

The lower elevations are grasslands with washes. The terrain in the higher elevations has draws and canyons within small, isolated mountain ranges. Rugged country exists in higher elevations.

  • About 1,440 square miles

  • 52.2% public land

  • Elevations from about 3,500-7,000 feet

High elevations are oak woodlands in the mountains. The lower elevations are Chihuahuan desert scrub, and high desert grassland.

Unit 30B has private land access issues that will greatly restrict access. The unit is a mix of private, State Trust, Forest Service and limited BLM lands.

  • ATVs are helpful on rough, rocky and steep roadways

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for inclement weather

  • Lower elevations have a lot of private property that will restrict access

  • Hunting for all species can be impacted by access issues

  • Some private property may allow access so be sure to respect the property

  • The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area is closed to firearm hunting

Remote camping is available on public lands within the unit, but be cautious of illegal immigration that occurs throughout the area. Theft and vandalism can occur. Motels are in Sierra Vista, Tombstone, Bisbee and Benson.
